Beijing, The People's Republic of China 19 Oct 2021

On 19 October, 106 of the case studies collected during the second call of the Global Solicitation on Best Poverty Reduction Practices were recognized for their excellence at the 2021 International Seminar on Global Poverty Reduction Partnerships in Beijing. The third round of solicitation was also launched at the event.

With a focus on promoting poverty alleviation via south-south cooperation, the ongoing project facilitates identification, collection, and dissemination of best practices associated with real-life undertakings in the PRC and around the world. A total of 494 case studies from 29 countries and regions were submitted during the second round.

Several case studies jointly submitted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the PRC’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs covering Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS), which are outstanding landscapes with aesthetic beauty that feature agricultural biodiversity, resilient ecosystems, and valuable cultural heritage, were recognized. During a webinar with Spain, Costa Rica, and private sector in December 2020, FAO Director-General Dr. Qu Dongyu noted that forests and soil systems are essential to the health of the planet and that GIAHS sites can play an important role in rural vitalization. The FAO has been working with the Chinese government to support capacity building related to implementation and management of the GIAHS program among its member states.

“The awardees…clearly illustrate that tremendous results can be achieved when development actors build synergies for a common goal,” Wang Wei, adviser to the president of the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and its director of global partnerships, noted in her closing remarks at the seminar, referring to the over 100 innovative approaches to poverty reduction that are being promoted.
