Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage Training Workshop

9 am - 5 pm Beijing Time, 20 Jul 2023 Hybrid

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5°C highlights that carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technology is key to achieving global carbon neutrality in this century. In the PRC, where the government has supported CCUS research and development, a variety of technologies have been developed. However, persistent challenges remain including high investment costs, high energy consumption of CCUS processes; and the lack of policies, regulations, and approval procedure of CCUS investment projects.

Yunnan Province is a remote and less developed province in the southwest PRC with a significant minority population. The Yunnan provincial government has followed the guidance of the central government in addressing climate change by developing locally suitable policies and actions.

Yunnan Province has a large share of CO2 emissions from iron and steel, nonferrous metal, and other carbon-intensive industries that are hard to decarbonize. These carbon-intensive industries play a key role in the social and economic development of Yunnan Province. Therefore, exploring a viable and economic approach to CO2 capture from iron and steel, nonferrous metal, and other carbon-intensive industries is crucial for Yunnan to achieve its carbon peaking and carbon neutrality targets, while maintaining sustainable social and economic development. CCUS has an important role to play in achieving carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals in Yunnan Province.

The TA project will enhance the capacity of the provincial government to address climate change through enabling policies; identify CCUS technologies applicable in iron, steel, and other carbon-intensive industries; and enhance the provincial government’s technical knowledge of the role of CCUS in achieving peaking carbon emissions and carbon neutrality targets.

As part of the TA 6679 project, CCUS capacity development workshops have been scheduled on 20 July 2023.  The workshop will cover the following topics:

  • Climate change and carbon neutrality.
  • CCUS technology development and feasibility.
  • Carbon trading, carbon goals, and green development.
  • CCUS business models.

Location: Hybrid, onsite in Kunming, and online (Zoom).
